Lana Smithson is a New England local, born and raised in Massachusetts. She currently alternates time between Maine and Florida, where she dives and cleans up fishing gear in both places. She was SCUBA certified through the British Sub Aqua Club while living in Europe many years ago and has since made it part of her lifestyle to remain actively diving year round.
Lana is a leader in the New England SCUBA diving community for her massive cleanup efforts both underwater while diving and also from the shores of each dive site before and after her dives. She has a keen eye for fishing gear and other trash that otherwise would be left underwater where harm to marine life is a concern. |
Lana uses her platforms to showcase images of trash collection to spread awareness to this growing issue. She hopes by doing so that she encourages divers to join in the underwater cleanup movement.
Lana often brings her camera along for her journeys. With it, she is able to capture the beauty of the marine life in our local New England waters. She enjoys sharing photos of the underwater world, especially with non-divers who don't get to experience that extraordinary world firsthand. |
Each dive site give so much to divers, and by picking up a bit of litter, divers will be able to continue to enjoy these sites for years to come. Plus, each piece of litter that's picked up is one less that might hurt the wildlife divers appreciate seeing
Lana Smithson raises the bar with her conservation efforts. At every dive site, Lana makes efforts to clear as much clutter from the beaches as possible. One would be surprised how much can hide at a beach but these images shed light on the issues our waters across New England are facing as they are becoming littered in debris, including huge amounts of fishing gear.
